Miles Away
Numbness surrounds you, the trail is eerily quiet and all the feeling has left your body. You want to feel anything that you can in your body parts, and thoughts of dying are going through your head. You are miles away from where you want to be, miles away from your family, miles away from warmth, miles away from food, miles away from sleep, and minutes to go before dying. This intense tragedy leads up to the memorable lesson you learn in the end.
"To Build a Fire" is obviously a tragedy and you knew it was going to be bad from the start. First of all it is a realistic story because it is very cold in the Yukon and there are some unintelligent people in the world. Also, it follows the plot line of a tragedy. Next there has to be a conflict in order for this story to be a tragedy so the conflict is that it is 75 below zero. Because this is a tragedy the main character has a rise to power. In this story his rise to power is that he creates a fire and is making fantastic time. Now the man’s tragic flaw comes into play and that is that “He is without imagination” as Jack London stated it. By this he means that he does not think that anything is going to go wrong when in fact it does. This creates his tragic fall when his feet are freezing and the fire was placed under a tree with a colossal amount of snow upon it. Burning hands were also an effect of this tragic fall which leads into his life coming to an end in a tragic death when he froze. Although this man is now dead, he taught me a very valuable lesson.
Unconcerned with what may happen and not even thinking about problems occurring explains how this man was. He did not care how cold it was, he had his mind set to where he was going and was not stopping until he got there. In this story I learned it is good to be an open-minded person but not so open-minded that you just act plain stupid sometimes. In this story the man was unconcerned with what might happen to him, well what did end up happening to him. This story taught me the danger of being ignorant. I am glad that I learned this valuable lesson.
By the end this man has lost all feeling in his body. He wanted to feel something, anything at all. He didn’t. He was too many miles away from where he wanted to be, too many miles away from his family, too many miles away from warmth, too many miles away from food, too many miles away from sleep, and too close to dying. In this tragedy he will never learn not to be so ignorant.

If you belong with them or not.
Just remember on this day,
That we will always love you just the same.
